Is a Neuropsychological Exam Right for You?

Changes in memory, attention, or decision-making can feel unsettling. You might wonder if these shifts are normal, or if they’re signs of something more. Neuropsychological testing is designed to give you objective answers. It’s a structured process that looks at various areas of cognitive functioning, such as attention, memory, and mood, to help you see the full picture.

The goal here is to give you a deeper understanding of your unique strengths and challenges, not just to diagnose. Together, we can figure out what’s going on and create a plan to help you move forward with confidence.

Benefits of Neuropsychological Testing

A neuropsychological assessment helps you see your mind clearly. It’s a way to understand where your strengths lie and where you might need some support. If you’re noticing changes in memory, focus, or problem-solving, this is a chance to find out what’s really going on. Here’s what you’ll gain:

  • Clarity on Your Cognitive Health: We’ll look closely at your memory, attention, and thinking to see if these changes are typical or need attention.

  • Insight into Strengths and Challenges: Every brain is unique. We’ll help you see what’s working well and where you might need extra support.

  • Guidance Moving Forward: You’ll leave with clear, simple steps to support your brain health.

What to Expect During Neuropsychological Testing

Our process includes three (sometimes four) steps to ensure you get a thorough and accurate assessment:

  • Comprehensive Intake (Telehealth or In-person, 1–1.5 hours): We’ll start with a detailed conversation to get to know you. We’ll talk about your memory concerns, your medical background, and any mental health history. This is a safe, supportive space where you can share openly.

  • Testing Session (In-person, 3–4 hours): This is the core of your assessment. You’ll complete a range of tasks, including pen-and-paper exercises, answering questions, and maybe some computer-based tasks. The testing itself is straightforward and designed to cover areas of cognitive health.

  • Feedback Session (Telehealth or In-person, 1 hour): After we’ve reviewed your results, we’ll meet to discuss the findings. I’ll explain what they mean in clear terms and offer recommendations for any next steps. You’ll have a chance to ask questions and understand exactly what the results tell us.

The whole process is meant to be thorough, supportive, and helpful. My goal is to provide you with real, actionable insights.

Frequently Asked Questions About Neuropsychological Testing

  • What does neuropsychological testing tell you?

Neuropsychological testing is a way to examine your thinking skills. It looks at things like attention, learning and memory, problem-solving, language, processing speed, and mood. It helps give a clearer picture of your mental strengths and challenges.

  • Can you diagnosis ADHD with neuropsychological testing?

Neuropsychological testing is not strictly necessary for diagnosing ADHD. While it can be helpful in certain situations, ADHD is typically diagnosed based on a comprehensive evaluation to include clinical interview, behavioral assessments, review of medical, developmental, and educational history, and observation of symptoms. Memory Gains PLLC does not conduct these types of evaluations, but we can provide you with referrals of other providers who do.

  • What do I need to start?

Typically, a referral from a medical provider is required before undergoing a neuropsychological evaluation. This is because neuropsychological assessments are often requested to address specific concerns about cognitive function, which may be related to medical conditions or mental health issues. The referral helps to ensure that the evaluation is medically necessary and that the evaluator has all relevant health information.

Have your provider submit a referral to us that includes the referral diagnosis, reason for the evaluation, and relevant visit notes.
